Climate Change and Pollution are Putting the Planet at RiskOne of the most pressing problems facing the planet today is climate change. In November 2018 the Fourth National Climate Assessment Report was released by the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), made up of 13 Federal agencies that conduct or use research on global change and its impact on society. The report concluded that “Climate change creates new risks and exacerbates existing vulnerabilities in communities across the United States, presenting growing challenges to human health and safety, quality of life, and the rate of economic growth.” In addition, pollution of air, water, and soil from industry and engine vehicle fumes, as well as improper disposal of metals, nitrates, plastic, and other forms of trash are removing supplements from the soil, impacting sources of clean drinking water, and causing acid rain.

An overdependence on plastic products is contributing to a worldwide emergency in waste transfer. Paper and textile products are biodegradable by their nature, but traditional plastics made from fossil fuels are not. Making the switch to biodegradable products is an eco-friendly and green way to support a healthier planet. Biodegradable products break down into their nontoxic component parts over time through the action of biological organisms and processes, so they don’t leach dangerous chemicals that can poison groundwater or emit off-gas pollutants into the air. In addition, biodegradable plastic production processes take 65% less energy than those required to produce petroleum-based plastics. That’s why companies like Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, are switching to biodegradable packaging for products ranging from produce to high-end electronics. “Moving toward zero waste is one of our three big corporate goals for the environment,” says Matt Kistler, Vice President of Private Brands and Product Development for the retailer.
